Katie was born in New Orleans, LA and grew up in Atlanta, GA. She earned a B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill and majored in psychology (1992). After college, she moved to Austin, TX where she worked with visually impaired children at Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired for four years. The last 2 years of her time in Austin were spent enjoying great music and working at a small design and manufacturing company that sold home furniture and accessories. The job took her to trade shows across the United States, and frequently to Monterrey, Mexico where she worked with the factory personnel to ensure that production and work environment standards were upheld. They weren’t. In late 1998, Katie moved to Asheville, NC and started law school at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law in 1999. Upon graduation, she and her young family lived in Oaxaca, Mexico where she studied for the NC Bar exam and immersed herself in a Spanish language program. She was soon back in Asheville full-time and working as a staff attorney, then managing attorney, for the Mountain Violence Prevention Project at Pisgah Legal Services. After five years at Pisgah Legal, Katie went into private practice as an associate at Siemens Family Law Group for four years, and in 2015, she started her own firm, Moorefield & Fisher, P.A., with attorney Rhonda Moorefield. In 2017, Katie joined the Van Winkle Law Firm, bringing a full practice with her and starting a family law section in one of Asheville’s oldest and largest law firms.
Katie loves living in Asheville with her two sons and her dog, Butters. Katie frequently hikes around Western NC with the boys and Butters, is an avid reader, gardener and lover of music. Traveling is high up on the list and she is planning a trip to the Dominican Republic in the near future.
