Anna S. Mills – New NC LEAP Chair

Anna S. Mills of The Van Winkle Law Firm has been named Chair of the NC LEAP Steering Committee. NC LEAP exists to assist low-wealth entrepreneurs with their legal needs in starting or expanding their businesses through pro bono service by North Carolina business and transactional lawyers.

The Steering Committee is comprised of attorneys who are members of the North Carolina Bar Association and community representatives.

Ms. Mills works with clients to help them successfully buy, sell and finance their businesses. She also counsels businesses and nonprofits regarding employment, corporate, contract and intellectual property issues and emerging issues related to sustainable products and services.

Mills to Speak on Recovery Zone Facility Bonds

The Henderson County Partnership for Economic Development will be hosting a lunch presentation on Recovery Zone Facility Bonds on Wednesday, November 18th from 12:30 - 2pm.  The event will take place in the Community Room of the Henderson County Historic Courthouse on Main Street.  There is no cost to attend the lunch meeting, but you must RSVP.

 

Presentations will be made by bond counsel representative Donald Ubell of Parker Poe, and borrowers counsel representative Anna Mills of The Van Winkle Law Firm.  Both will be able to answer questions that you may have about how to qualify and utilize a portion of Henderson County’s allocation.  Representatives from financial institutions with interest in supplying a letter of credit to support the bond process will also be in attendance.

 

If you are considering a significant expansion or new construction, Recovery Zone Facility bonds may be a viable funding source for your project.  Please attend the luncheon on November 18th to learn more.

 

NC LEAP - Entity Formation - Starting Your Business on the Right Foot

On Thursday, September 24th, 2009, entrepreneurs can learn more about the various types of entity formation from Anna Mills of The Van Winkle Law Firm. In addition, participants will also learn how selecting an incorrect business entity could limit options for growing one’s business while increasing personal and tax liability.

Will Small Businesses Benefit from TARP Funds?

At the request of President-Elect Obama, President Bush has initiated the process to release the second $350 billion from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). Bush’s request triggers a 15-day period in which Congress can vote to deny the release of these funds. If the funds are released, President Bush has indicated that he will defer the allocation of these funds to President Elect Obama after he is sworn into office on January 20th.

No Greenwashing: Advertising Green Products

From grocery stores specializing in organic foods to green builders, Western North Carolina is home to a growing number of businesses that provide “green” products and services intended to provide benefits to the consumer and the environment. Because of the strong market for these products and services, businesses may be tempted to “greenwash” or exaggerate the environmental benefits of their product or service. Even if a business’ motives are pure, it can be difficult to know how to market products and services because the “green” market is evolving so quickly.
