Eleven Van Winkle attorneys honored in state, national publications
Eleven attorneys at The Van Winkle Law Firm have been honored by their peers in the latest editions of the top legal directories in North Carolina and the United States.
Nine lawyers were selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2009*: Jones P. Byrd (in the Construction Law, Eminent Domain and Condemnation Law, and Personal Injury Litigation categories), Cynthia W. Eller (Real Estate Law), Robert H. Haggard (Trusts and Estates), Craig D. Justus (Land Use and Zoning Law), Barry B. Kempson (Trusts and Estates), Brian F.D. Lavelle (Tax Law as well as Trusts and Estates), Larry S. McDevitt (Commercial Litigation and Personal Injury Litigation), Philip J. Smith (Commercial Litigation) and Albert L. Sneed, Jr. (Bankruptcy, Creditor-Debtor Rights Law and Commercial Litigation). Kempson and Lavelle have been honored 20 years or more in this publication, and Smith and Sneed have been honored 10 years or more. The current edition of The Best Lawyers in America® is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which more than 32,000 leading attorneys cast almost two million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their specialties.
Five attorneys have been named to Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite 2009: Carolyn L. Coward, Haggard and Kempson in the Tax and Estate Law category; W. James Johnson in Construction Law; and Sneed in Business Law. The results of Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite are based on a survey sent to each of the more than 19,000 members of the North Carolina State Bar living in North Carolina. Only three percent of the state’s attorneys are recognized in this publication.

Super Lawyers names North Carolina’s top lawyers as chosen by a survey of more than 17,000 active attorneys across the state in practice for five years or more. The listing represents the top 5 percent of attorneys in more than 70 practice areas.
