Jones P. Byrd

Jones joined Van Winkle in 1995 after spending over two decades as a partner in a neighboring Asheville firm. Jones’s practice continues to focus on civil litigation and dispute resolution. In his active eminent domain practice, Jones represents landowners and one utility condemnor, and he lectures from time to time in the eminent domain field.

• Obtained recovery in excess of $1.1 million for Western North Carolina maintenance worker and his wife against Pennsylvania autoclave door-locking mechanism manufacturer.
• Represented international paper company in eminent domain case brought by local county condemning land for landfill, resulting in favorable jury verdict, with total recovery exceeding $1.1 million plus costs.
• Obtained recoveries exceeding $1 million for victims of
  clergy abuse.
• Represented eight landowners with small businesses, raw land, and homes in eminent domain case when US highway was widened, resulting in total recoveries exceeding $2 million, averaging triple
  the compensation offered.

Jones is married to Sandra P. Byrd, Ed.D., who serves as a professor, Assistant Provost, and Director of the Asheville Graduate Center at the University of North Carolina, Asheville. Their son, Jones P. Byrd, Jr., practices law in Winston-Salem, NC, and their daughter, Julia I. Byrd, is a marine biologist and environmental scientist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources in Charleston, S.C. Jones’s hobbies include bird hunting, fly fishing, cycling, and hiking. He likes to travel both near and far to participate in these activities.
