Meet Heather

Heather joined the Van Winkle Law Firm in 2012 and focuses her practice on representing clients in complex business-related disputes.  Her litigation practice includes patent and trademark infringement, copyright infringement, antitrust issues, contracts, trade secrets, covenants not to compete, unfair business practices, fraud, insurance, and employment law issues.

Prior to joining Van Winkle, Heather worked for nine years as the Executive Director of the Asheville Jewish Community Center.  She has a special interest in legal issues facing non-profit organizations, and she advises non-profit clients on issues related to governance, tax-exempt status, risk management, and employment law.

Following law school, Heather lived and worked in the Washington, DC area.  She served as a law clerk to the Honorable Welton Curtis Sewell, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia.  She was also formerly associated with the Washington, DC office of Jones Day.  But, as a native of Asheville, North Carolina, Heather was pleased to return to the area in 1999.

In 2004, Heather was the first Buncombe County attorney to win the North Carolina Bar Association’s Younger Lawyer Pro Bono Service Award for her work representing a property owner in a construction warranty action through the Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyers Program at Pisgah Legal Services.
