Carleton Metcalf maintains a general practice in the area of civil litigation handling business and contract litigation, personal injury, and professional negligence matters. In addition, Carleton has a growing practice in the area of civil rights and governmental liability and regularly appears as lead or local counsel in federal court. He is admitted to practice before all state trial and appellate courts in North Carolina as well as before the three United States District Courts in North Carolina, the United States Courts of Appeal for the Fourth Circuit and Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Carleton completed his undergraduate and legal education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1994, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in history and later was awarded a Juris Doctor degree from the university's School of Law, where he was inducted into the Order of the Barristers of the Holderness Moot Court and served as president of the law class of 1997.

- Successfully defended several wrongful death and personal injury cases against prison medical staff for alleged violations of civil rights and medical malpractice in both federal and state courts.
- Handled constitutional tort and Title VII harassment claims against judicial officer, including successful appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
- Obtained summary judgment for specific performance in $2 million commercial real estate transaction.
- Obtained summary judgment for public hospital and physician in constitutional tort/medical credentialing case by former medical staff member (currently on appeal).
- Regularly serves as lead or local counsel in cases pending before Federal and State courts including matters involving questions of intellectual property, products liability, insurance, personal injury, and business/commercial interests.
